From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gilles Hocquart, (16941 April 1783) was from France and minor nobility. The family were successful administrators and financiers.

Hocquart was chosen to replace Claude-Thomas Dupuy as Intendant of New France because of his background and because he was deemed to be a more compatible choice to work with Governor Charles de Beauharnois. He held this position from 1729-1748. He was also Louis the fourteenth's cousin,as well as played an important role in the short time that Esther Brandeau,-said to be the first Jew to set foot in Canada- stayed in New France.
