Gilberto Martinez Solares

With over 150 films to his credit, Mexican film director Gilberto Martinez Solares was one of his country's most prolific filmmakers. Before working in film, he started two photographic studios in Mexico city, one in Hollywood, and another in Paris. He started out doing camera chores on Rosario (1935), but did not make his feature film directorial debut until 1938 with El Senor Alcade (Mr. Mayor). Solares is credited with having significantly added to the growth of Mexican cinema during the '40s and '50s, an era that is considered the country's golden age of movies. He was the recipìent of several awards, and the "Festival of the three continents" in Nantes, France, issues a prize with his name to recognize new directors (prix Gilberto Martinez Solares).
Solares died of a heart attack in Mexico City on January 18, 1997, at age 90.
