Gilbert Kennedy, 1st Lord Kennedy

Gilbert Kennedy, 1st Lord Kennedy (b. c. 1406, d. after 6 March 1478/1479) was a Scottish lord, the son of Sir James Kennedy the younger, of Dunure, and Lady Mary Stewart, daughter of King Robert III of Scotland.

He had two children either out of wedlock or by an unnamed wife.

He married (1) Catherine Maxwell, daughter of Herbert Maxwell, 1st Lord Maxwell, circa 1440. They had two children.

  • John Kennedy, 2nd Lord Kennedy (1454, d. bt 24 Jul 1508 - 13 May 1509)

He married (2) Isabel Ogilvy, daughter of Sir Walter Ogilvy of Lintrathen, after 1460.


He held the office of Keeper of the Castle of Lochdoun.

He was created 1st Lord Kennedy between 27 March 1457 and 20 March 1458.

In 1460 on the death of King James II, he was one of the six Regents of Scotland.

He held the office of Constable of Stirling Castle in 1466.
