Gifhorn (IPA: [ˈgɪfhɔʁn]) is a town and capital of the district Gifhorn, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated at the confluence of the Ise river and the Aller river, near the cities of Hannover, Celle, and Wolfsburg.

Gifhorn was first mentioned in 1196, when it was located at the crossing of two important merchant routes, one transporting salt between Lüneburg and Braunschweig, the other transporting grain between Celle and Magdeburg.
