Gierle is a small village in the Kempen in the province of Antwerp.
Since 1977 it has been a part of a larger community: Lille, Belgium
This small village of about 4200 inhabitants is characterised by its 19th century village center and a recreation domain called "De Lilse Bergen".
The most famous inhabitant of Gierle was Louis Neefs, one of the most popular Belgian singers from the last century, who died tragically in a car accident on Christmas eve 1980.
Through history, Gierle was mostly connected to the neighbouring village Tielen because they shared both lord and priest. Even nowadays the inhabitants of both villages feel that there still is a special bond between them.
