Barbary Macaque

Please leave off the trivia. The article is about the species, not about the particular group, although there's some discussion about the group. If you think an officer in charge of watching the monkeys is noteworthy, make another article about the group of monkeys. - UtherSRG (talk) 14:30, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Gibraltar-Fauna-Stub

Hi - a stub template or category which you created has been nominated for deletion or renaming at Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion. The stub type, which was not proposed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals, does not meet the standard requirements for a stub type, either through being incorrectly named, ambiguously scoped, or through failure to meet standards relating to the current stub hierarchy or likely size, as explained at Wikipedia:Stub. Please feel free to make any comments at WP:SFD regarding this stub type, and in future, please consider proposing new stub types first! Grutness...wha? 02:59, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi again - you wrote:Hi, I am fairly new to creating articles on Wikipedia. Could you please help me on understanding why this stub is up for deletion and what I can do to make it right. Thanks for your time.
Well, first, stub types are generally only created when there are enough stubs for them to be useful to editors. Generally this is when there are about 50-60 stubs (unless there's a specific WikiProject on that topic, when the threshold drops). Occasionally, special "upmerged" templates (feeding into a larger stub category, like Gibraltar-geo-stub) are made, but they are generally only used in the case of geo-stubs, bio-stubs, and any case where a stub type is getting close to the threshold needed for splitting. In the case of fauna from Gibraltar, there is currently only one stub article listed in Cat:Gibraltar stubs, so it's certainly not close to reaching threshold (and there are only about 50 Gibraltar stubs in total, so that category isn't in need of splitting).
Also, there are specific ways that stub types are split and specific naming conventions used for the templates. In the case of fauna, it is split into stub types by the type of fauna, not the location, since it's far more likely that an editor knowing about fish, say, will know about fish worldwide than about the birds and fish of a specific country. Also, since animals don't tend to obey national boundaries, splitting by country isn't necessarily a good way of splitting fauna stubs anyway. As far as the naming conventions are concerned, all stub templates use lower case letters except for proper nouns, so even if a stub template for fauna from Gibraltar was a reasonable idea, it would be named Gibraltar-fauna-stub, not Gibraltar-Fauna-Stub.
As far as "making it right", basically if you think this stub type is still worth having, you can argue a case for it at WP:SFD - if not, then you could always agree to its deletion, in which case, since you are the creator of the template, it can be deleted more quickly than going through the normal debating process.
Hope that all makes sense - and sorry about the nomination for deletion! Grutness...wha? 23:37, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi again - yes, it's only the template that's proposed for deletion. SFD is only involved in deleting templates and categories, not the articles themselves. Any articles marked with it will simply be changed so that they are marked with {{gibraltar-stub}} or whatever is the most approriate other stub type. Grutness...wha? 23:05, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Since the page's creator agred to deletion, it could be speedily deleted, so I did :) Grutness...wha? 23:32, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
S'alright :) Grutness...wha? 22:38, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

WikiProject Gibraltar

Hi Gibmetal77, welcome to Wikipedia. :-)

Sorry to see you quit Wikipedia:WikiProject Gibraltar. You're welcome to rejoin at any time if you wish. In the meantime, you may find this new public watchlist to be of use in monitoring changes to the Gibraltar-related articles (see [1] to view it in action). -- ChrisO 00:15, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi ChrisO, thanks for the warm welcome! I quit the project due to the issues arising around it. However I am keeping an eye on this dispute and have already added Gib related articles to the public watchlist. Hope this is ok! Gibmetal77 23:23, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Linguisticks

The article Linguisticks has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This was done because the article seemed to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it did not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert notability may be deleted at any time. If you can indicate why the subject is really notable, you are free to re-create the article, making sure to cite any verifiable sources.

Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and for specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. NawlinWiki 17:21, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Per your request, I copied the content of the deleted article to your userspace at User:Gibmetal77/Linguisticks. I should caution you that if you repost the article, it is likely to be deleted again unless you can show the company's notability (see WP:CORP) through independent, reliable sources (see WP:ATTRIBUTION). NawlinWiki 19:46, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Sorry for the late reply. I see your point, thanks :) Gibmetal77 09:28, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

Infobox FYI

Just FYI - there is an appropriate infobox for singles (not albums) at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Songs. Referenced from article The River (single). Thanks! SkierRMH 04:31, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing this out. I was still getting to grips with WP when I created the article. Infobox for that article has now been corrected Gibmetal77 09:30, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

Fluent Spanish

Although people in Gibraltar certainly speak a lot of Spanish I don't think its correct to say that most Gibraltarians are fluent in the language. Similarly, listening to people interviewed on UK television many people there have a pretty poor grasp of English. One of the reasons for the proposed institute cervantes is the Spanish perception that use of the language is in decline locally. There is also a big difference between Spanish on TVE and what one hears in La Linea --Gibnews 23:07, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply Gibnews. I do agree with you, the term fluent was not appropriate. I have changed this now to say that they speak Spanish to a certain degree. I intend on adding more cited information to this section soon as at the moment it doesn't really say much about language in Gibraltar. Please let me know what you think. Gibmetal77 23:25, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, although I'd be inclined to say something like speak Spanish and English interchangably. Glaswegians and Geordies understand their fellows in great detail, even if nobody else does. Andalucia needs the Institute Cervantes more than the kids at Bayside studying A level Spanish, and James Gaggero went to a public school and speaks better English than most MP's but hey language is a means to an end, rather than an end in itself I think.
What we do need is more participation from Gibraltar editors, like yourself, who understand these things, and less 'balance' if that means including anti-gib propaganda from those who have never even seen the place. --Gibnews 18:52, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
Please feel free to change it to that if you so wish. I am quite busy at the moment, and unable to contribute as much as I'd like to. However, by the end of the month I should be free to contribute further to these articles. I know what you mean, I am completely fluent in Spanish (Castellano) and I do believe that my English is of a high standard, but I do agree with you, this doesn't apply to most in Gib. It's all down to education.
I do think that there is still a lot that can be done to improve Gibraltar related articles and Gibraltar editors are probably going to be the best when adding info on the matter. However, this must be done maintaining a neutral POV which I think has been fair so far. I myself take specific care to maintain this neutral POV when contributing. Gibmetal77 19:43, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
True; when you get a chance take a look at the Spanish version as my use of the language is best described as effluent. BUT Gibraltar is no longer considered to be a colony its time the language was updated to reflect the current status. Indeed the official version is el territorio no autónomo de Gibraltar, cuyas relaciones exteriores asume el Reino Unido.. I may steal your paella button, as thats a good idea and one item of Spanish culture thats OK with me. Of course there is also the viniculture ... --Gibnews 18:29, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
Indeed, I wouldn't survive without my dose of Spanish food. It has a certain je ne sais quoi about it that really suits me. I will take a look at the article on the es:WP and see what I can do when I have enough time to look at it properly. Feel free to serve yourself una tapita de paella from my user page. ¿De marisco o mixta? Gibmetal 77 20:04, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
Excellent! Never mind a tapita I had a plateful. When you have time can you take a look at the page on communications on the es gib page as my attempt at saying we have a digital telephone exchange, a fibre optic network and a tv and radio station has been deleted as 'incomprehensible' - yes the use of language sucks, but that may not be the only reason for deleting it ... --Gibnews 22:01, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
Well I hope you enjoyed it! I will do so when I have time as I'm really busy for the next ten days or so and only really have time for minor edits. Tell you what, why don't you tell me (in English) what you want to include and I shall translate it into Spanish? Might be the best way to go about it. Gibmetal 77 23:37, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
