[edit] Notability thoughts

I removed the PROD notice, but if someone wants to nominate this article for deletion, I won't be offended.

IMHO, notability is a close call on this one, but we should continue to include Haddad.

  • On the one hand Google, Amazon, WorldCat, et al. find plenty of references to Haddad, but on the other, his publications are mostly from specialty press, and aren't held by many WorldCat member libraries, and his Amazon sales figures are low.
  • Similarly, on the one hand, he is frequently cited in various internet discussions on Islamic writings and religious doctrine, but on the other, internet postings don't necessarily make you notable by Wikipedia standards.

If it were up to me, I would call Haddad notable. He's obviously widely quoted and widely present on the Internet, and seems to be a notable figure in contemporary Islamic thought. He's publishing regularly. On the other hand, Haddad's not attached to a physical university, AFAICT, and he's not published in the academic press. I would be interested to hear people's thoughts. Hi Theron, looking at the current state of the article, I do not see an assertion of notability, and what I mean by this is that the article is missing a statement such as "Haddad is influential and notable in contemporary Islasmic thought." If you can add that statement or a similar assertion of notability, it would help. It would especially help if you can provide a source for the assertion of notability, making it verifiable. Hmm. I see your point, and appreciate it, but I'm not sure where to go. Haddad is all over Google, so I can see that many, many bloggers refer to him as an authority, and I can see the endorsements from various other figures in the texts for his books and speaking engagements, but I'm not sure any of that is a reliable source. Maybe his notability is not itself verifiable by reliable sources, or maybe I just need to try harder. Thanks again, TheronJ 21:46, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
