Ghostmaker is the second book in the Gaunt's Ghosts series by Dan Abnett, as well as the second book in the series' first story arc The Founding. It is set in the fictional futuristic Warhammer 40,00 universe, and it primarily revolves around the Tanith First-and-Only's conflict on Monthax.
The novel is interspersed with short stories previously published in Inferno!, where the series began. These stories, which mostly focus on character-building, are represented as flashback chapters, introduced in preparation for the story's climax
[edit] Plot Summary
Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt and his men, the Tanith First-and-Only, are stationed on the warm, humid, jungle world of Monthax. As Gaunt tours his trench line, he is reminded of the different personalities of his men, and the different victories they have won; Scout-Sergeant Oan Mkoll's honed stealth on Ramillies 268-43; Colonel Colm Corbec's fine leadership on Caligula; Master Sniper Hlaine Larkin's amazing marksmanship on Bucephalon; Chief Medic Tolin Dorden's keen devotion on Nacedon; Trooper Caffran's ingenuity at Oskray Hive, on Sapiencia, and even Flamer-Trooper Brostin, Troopers Milo, Caffran, Raglon and Bragg, and Sergeant Varl's teamwork onboard the hexathedral Sanctity, where a rigged gambling game brings Milo under investigation of Lilith Abferquarn, an Inquisitor. When the story reaches its climax, the First-and-Only, as well as the Royal Volpone 50th "Bluebloods", the Roane Deepers, and other Imperial Guard regiments are fighting across the rainforest-like terrain on Monthax against Eldar foes. The Eldar are fighting to protect a Webway portal, and all the while, a warp storm ravages the planet, wiping out hordes of either side. Eventually, Gaunt, Gilbear, Lilith and a few Guardsmen reach the temple which houses the Webway portal. As Eon Kull, Old One of the Eldar, dies trying to close it, Inquisitor Lilith finishes the spell, ending the warp storm and affording both the Guard and the Eldar victory.
