Former Dominick's Supermarket, an example of a Ghostbox
A ghostbox is term for an empty building that formerly housed a big-box store.[1] Reasons for the cause of ghostboxes range from closing due to poor sales, to a big-box retailer needing more space to accommodate a new format. Another cause is when companies downsize, forcing them to reduce the number of stores, or liquidate.
Wal-Mart is one retailer which has produced ghostboxes due to closing stores and moving them to larger locations. With the adaptation to their "superstore" concept, once the superstores are built, the older, smaller stores are abandoned, although some of them are eventually are sold to developers for other uses, including new stores.
