Ghent is a town in Carroll County, Kentucky, United States, along the Ohio River. The population was 371 at the 2000 census. The name comes from the European city Ghent.

Ghent is located at 38°44′10″N, 85°3′37″W (38.736116, -85.060225)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.9 km²), all of it land.

The community is located on U.S. Route 42 at Kentucky Route 47. Ghent is north of Interstate 71.

Ghent is on the opposite side of the Ohio River from Vevay, Indiana, but is not linked to it by a bridge.

Ghent was settled at the end of Eighteenth Century and was first known as "McCool's Creek Settlement." [1]. The community was established in 1814. The Town is named is derived from the Treaty of Ghent, which was signed on December 24, 1814, in Ghent, Flanders, United Kingdom of the Netherlands, which ended the War of 1812 between the United States and United Kingdom. Henry Clay suggested the town's name, he represented the United States at the Peace Commission. The Ghent Post Office opened in 1816.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 371 people, 125 households, and 103 families residing in the city. The population density was 517.4 people per square mile (198.9/km²). There were 152 housing units at an average density of 212.0/sq mi (81.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 89.49% White, 5.93% African American, 3.50% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.20% of the population.

There were 125 households out of which 36.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.8% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.6% were non-families. 14.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.97 and the average family size was 3.17.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 102.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $39,028. Males had a median income of $32,031 versus $17,813 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,106. About 8.6% of families and 12.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.0% of those under age 18 and 3.0% of those age 65 or over.
