The population given is not verifiable and seems unusually large for a small town of that size. The West Bengal census of 2001 lists the largest towns of West Midnapore (Paschim Medinipur) as having 188,000 people. http://www.wbcensus.gov.in/Datatables/02/Table-12.htm

Therefore I'm deleting the sentence on the population pending citation of sources. There is no data on religious affiliation in the census either.
