Ghanashyam Vaidya is a general and laparoscopic surgeon working at Karnatak Health Institute, Ghataprabha, Dist:Belgaum, Karnataka, India. This is a rural charitable institute, a 350 bedded hospital with a multitude of social activities in the surrounding villages. Dr. Ghanashyam Vaidya has dedicated his life to this institution, and works in the capacity of Joint Chief Medical officer and Governing council member of the institute.
His special interest lies in endoscopic surgeries - gastroscopies, bronchoscopies, laparoscopic surgeries, TUR-P etc. Being in a rural place he also handles a large number of medical cases also. He has conducted over 25000 surgeries spanning a career of 24 years.
He is more known to the medical world for his book - "General Practice - a practical manual", his audio cassettes on ideal case presentations in Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics, and educational films on various subjects - ECG Reading, X-ray Reading, Operative Surgery for undergraduates, Clinical Examination in Surgery, The Art of Bandaging and GPClinics - a case collection for General Practitioners.
He is also a medical cartoonist and his cartoons on the Life in a Medical College can be viewed at his Cartoon site
He conducted a Video Quiz for Doctors, a first of its kind on National TV (DD2) for 2 yrs / 100 episodes in the programme Medivision.
He has pioneered the concept that educational videos when well produced, can be better than books.
