Gewissæ

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gewissae or Gewisse was a tribal grouping of the upper Thames region of England which formed one of the bases of the kingdom of Wessex. (The name approximately means "trustworthy ones".) The name "Gewis" appears in the genealogy of the Wessex Kings, but this is thought to be a contrived name from this grouping. Such lists of ancestors also include Woden, Jesus, Noah and Adam. For Bede, writing in the early eighth century, the Gewisse are identical to the West Saxon kingdom of Wessex. It is more likely that the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle has conflated the histories of the settlements in the upper Thames, notably around Dorchester-on-Thames with the coastal settlements in southern Hampshire.
