[edit] Overview
[edit] An historical feat for the Get Smart franchise
With the revival series on FOX, Get Smart became the first television franchise to air new episodes on each of the aforementioned current four major American television networks, although several TV shows in the 1940s and 1950s aired on NBC, CBS, ABC and DuMont. The different versions of Get Smart did not all feature the original lead cast intact. The first four seasons of the original Get Smart series aired on NBC, while the fifth and final season aired on CBS. Meanwhile, the 1989 reunion movie Get Smart, Again! aired on ABC.
[edit] Synopsis
The relative success of Get Smart, Again! eventually prompted the development of a weekly revival of Get Smart with Don Adams and Barbara Feldon reprising their characters (Maxwell Smart and Agent 99 respectively). Maxwell Smart was now the Chief of CONTROL, his and 99's (now a politician) bungling son, Zach (Andy Dick), becomes CONTROL's star agent. Zach is teamed with the relunctant Agent 66 (Elaine Hendrix), as they try to stop KAOS from controlling the world's economy (after the Cold War, they had to lower their standards). Joining Zach and 66 is Trudy (Heather Morgan), the revial's equivalent of Larabee; Agent 13, a master of disguise.
Though Zachary Smart's name was revealed in the FOX revival, his sister's name remains as yet unrevealed.
[edit] Cancellation
The show failed to recapture the spirit of the original. The last episode of the 1995 series shows that just as Siegfried is leaving a room, Maxwell Smart accidentally activates an atomic bomb just before the end of the show. (The teaser for the episode shows an atomic bomb going off.) This ending is similar to a device used by the Get Smart-inspired series Sledge Hammer! at the end of its first season. There weren't high hopes for the series as Andy Dick had already moved on to NewsRadio[1], which premiered weeks later in 1995.
[edit] References
- ^ When Dick, still contracted to Get Smart, got an offer to become a regular on NewsRadio, he made it known that he wanted out. Dick began publicly trashing Get Smart in interviews (he also claimed Adams didn't want to do the show). The lousy ratings no doubt made the issue moot, with the network having effectively written off the show before ever airing it. Dick went on to NewsRadio—a classic sitcom—and lived strangely ever after.
