The name Gerrit is possibly of Dutch origin, also Peter and Smit (without the h) are Dutch names.

[edit] Anti-Dramshop Party

I've found some things which link Smith with the creation of an "anti-dramshop party" in New York in the 1840s and 1850s (which apparently played some role in the election of proto-prohibitionist Myron Clark in 1854).
