[edit] Useful subpages

[edit] October stuff

is at Portal:Germany/Selected article/2006/October (Paragraph 175) and at Portal:Germany/Selected picture/2006/October (Einstein Tower). Any objections? Kusma (討論) 21:01, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Portal shortcut

I just noticed that somebody created the nice type-in shortcut P:DE for the portal. Kusma (討論) 12:11, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Unfortunately PT:DE is an interwiki link, so we can't use it for this talk page. Kusma (討論) 13:08, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Portal:Germany/New articles and Portal:Germany/New article announcements

These should be kept in sync, but usually differ in content, because many people only list their articles at one of the pages. due to their different format (for which I am responsible), that is slightly bothersome. Does anybody have a good idea how to fix this or do we just need some diligent WikiGnome who will sync the pages every three days or so? Kusma (討論) 09:28, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] November

My suggestions: Selected article Max Weber, using Image:Max Weber.jpg (I guess it's time for a bio again) and as selected picture the

Alte Nationalgalerie

Alte Nationalgalerie represented by Image:AlteNationalgalerie 1a.jpg. The article is Featured here, the image exzellent at de:. Kusma (討論) 21:13, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Goethe image

Perhaps we could think about replacing it at some point. Maybe a Brandenburg gate image or some other German symbol? Kusma (討論) 20:57, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

More so, since this is Goethe in Italy, in the Roman Campagna, to be exact. --Johannes Rohr 21:43, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Berlin

You are very welcome to comment on this city-article at Wikipedia:Peer review/Berlin/archive1. Is it already mature enough to promote it towards FA-candidate-procedure? Lear 21 13:47, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] December

IG Farben Building

I suggest selected article IG Farben Building, using Image:Goethe University Frankfurt Poelzig Building.jpeg, and as Selected picture a non-photograph:

Der Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer

The Caspar David Friedrich picture Der Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer. We need more non-Berlin pictures, by the way. Kusma (討論) 15:44, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

The picture is a FP on Commons but failed on enwiki, by the way. Kusma (討論) 15:46, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
Done at Portal:Germany/Selected article/2006/December and Portal:Germany/Selected picture/2006/December. Kusma (討論) 07:03, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Plans

I think we should go for a longer DYK (perhaps 5?) and possibly eliminate the new articles thing, which is hard to maintain and doesn't look all that great to readers (was remarked during the FP nom). Or the number of DYKs could correspond to the size of the Selected Picture box (my current method for balancing the two columns is by the size of the new articles box). Thoughts? Kusma (討論) 15:10, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

I agree with you that the "new articles" page is not so useful on the portal page. What else could we place instead? Maybe also expand the Anniversary thing so that we have at least 2 birth, 2 death and 2 other events that occured on the specific day. Panth 14:01, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
It is not easy to expand the anniversary thing or to find two interesting events of each kind for every day (and limiting to two per day would be pretty bad here). However, if you have good ideas to improve the Anniversary pages, by all means go ahead! After creating more than 300 of them, I probably have lost all creativity about them.
Other things that could be added are stuff like a Selected City (changing weekly? technically not difficult) or a box focussing on one of the states (should probably also change weekly, or "randomly"). As always, be bold if you have good ideas what to improve. A good place for testing is always Portal:Germany/Tomorrow. Kusma (討論) 10:52, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
This sounds like a good idea to me. How about creating a box "Focus on federal state xxx" displaying the banner or emlem of it and beneath this weaks featured city:"blabla". Then we can select four cities or small town articles for that month. And next month the same with another federal state. If we x out Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen we would have 13 federals to work with so it would kind of fit into a year. Only thing is I dont know how to technically perform this ;) But I could research a list of articles for next 6 month or so in advance. I try also to test some things for this idea tomorrow in my sandbox and then i will show you. Panth 01:03, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
I don't think the state and city we choose need to be related (if they aren't, we get more variety but less focus). I'm looking forward to your suggestions; I'll try to work on something over the weekend. Kusma (討論) 15:08, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
I made a version of the Portal without New articles box at Portal:Germany/Test. As I moved the Selected picture to the wider box on the left, I am satisfied with it. I tried a version with a selected city at Portal:Germany/Test2, but do not like the result at all. Probably less is more and we should try to keep the portal simple like other FPs, for example Portal:Australia. Kusma (討論) 12:16, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
I think its the right move to get rid of the new articles section. Either of the above tests are decent, though the first does have a cleaner layout. If you decide to go with the version that has the Selected city feature, perhaps you could mitigate the column disproportion by shifting Related portals to full width before the topics box. --cj | talk 00:26, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
With a slightly longer DYK, Portal:Germany/Test2 with city could look quite decent. I'm not sure whether I really want to write a new city blurb once per week; unlike most FA introductions, many city articles don't have sufficiently good lead sections to make this mostly a cut and paste job. Kusma (討論) 13:21, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
I agree if we cannot get easy copy/paste data for the city then we should probably go for the simpler version without city. Otherwise it would be exhausting work. Panth 10:55, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
Well, the daily Anniversaries also are sort of exhausting work. I just currently don't want to commit myself to more scheduled wikiwork. Kusma (討論) 09:40, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

I have changed the portal to the Test version, increasing the Selected image, removing the New articles section and removing some of the not-too-necessary dates. Please use Portal:Germany/Did you know to announce cool articles. I'll try to adjust the column lengths for landscape vs. portrait Selected pictures by changing the number of News and DYK items. Kusma (討論) 09:40, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] January article

We should use something from our selection of Nazi-related articles (I have used almost everything else...) How about Anschluss, using Image:1anschluss.gif?

We could use this together with a simple winter picture like Image:Windbuchencom.jpg of the Schauinsland in the Black Forest. Kusma (討論) 22:03, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Featured!

The Germany article has reached a new level!--Stone 10:26, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Unfortunately it is not suitable as Selected article here :-( Please write other Germany-related FAs! :-) Kusma (討論) 10:32, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] February

I'd like to use FA Carl Friedrich Gauss in February (he died in February, although that's not really a good reason). For the selected picture, I'd like to use this image of Neuschwanstein. As usual, I'd like to hear any objections or better suggestions, other that we need more Germany-related FAs and FPs soon :-) Kusma (討論) 15:12, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

Done and done, per the usual lack of objections. Kusma (討論) 14:00, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] March

It is finally time for a long-requested article to appear on the Portal page: Eifel Aqueduct (I suggest we take Image:AquaeduktMechernich.jpg which is the most descriptive of the images, showing a reconstruction instead of a ruin). For the picture, how about this great collection of grey concrete blocks from the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe? Kusma (討論) 07:57, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

Implemented. Kusma (討論) 17:59, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Related portals box

This should probably be redesigned. Any good ideas? Kusma (討論) 07:40, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Why do you think it needs to be redesigned? Only in order to balance out the left and right sides of the portal? We could do that by including a sixth entry in the DYK section.-- Carabinieri 22:19, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
Or by switching the positions of the categories and the related portals boxes.-- Carabinieri 22:28, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

I think it is a bit largish and the three different lines for different types of related portals are a bit much. I can't quite pinpoint what exactly bugs me about it, though. The balancing of the columns is an eternal problem that is mostly caused by the different size of the Selected Picture box depending on whether we choose a landscape or portrait oriented one. Balancing that by News or DYK is a good idea. Kusma (talk) 03:03, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Support Germany-article for Today's featured article !

Please comment at Today's featured article for this proposal. Lear 21 14:33, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] April

How about Karl Dönitz, using Image:Karl Dönitz.jpg together with the Deutsche Bank Twin Towers in Frankfurt, Commons FP Image:Deutsche-Bank-Frankfurt-am-Main.jpg? We need more Featured articles; most of what is left are battle articles that are not really suitable. Kusma (talk) 08:34, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

I agree with myself and have implemented these suggestions. Kusma (talk) 14:37, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Stubs for towns and villages in Bavaria

Hi, when controlling IP-edits in the German WP I registered a lot of new IW links to the EN:WP for towns and villages in Bavaria. Such as Penzing, Germany for instance. I want to bring this to your attention, since some of them are rather inaccurate then helpful, because there's a difference between a Gemeinde (municipality), Ortschaft (village), Stadt (town) and Markt (I don't have an English expression, these are villages who had the right to held up markets for ages). Basically this are the edits concerned. --213.155.224.232 17:39, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] May

I suggest Franks and Image:Goettingen Marktplatz Oct06 Antilived.jpg. Kusma (talk) 10:56, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Done. Kusma (talk) 09:07, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Almost June

So how about Sino-German cooperation (1911–1941) and Image:Werdau Rathaus.jpg? Kusma (talk) 17:42, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Done. Others may also make suggetsions if they want, by the way :-) Kusma (talk) 11:24, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] July Suggestions

Hey guys sorry for my long absence. Had to do some exams :) I have a suggestion for the succession of the Sino-German cooperation, how about this article SS Bremen (1929)? It made its maiden voyage on July 26 1929 and was holder of the blue ribbon. Ok the rest you can read in the article. --Panth 12:43, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Unfortunately it's not a Featured article. A list of Germany-related FAs can be found here. If we do drop the FA requirement (we might be forced to do that unless we can create more FAs soon) we should use our quality assessments and take at least GA-Class articles first. Kusma (talk) 12:50, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
I see the point. We have material left for about one year. Thats not much ;o We should see how many new FA articles we have until Oktober and then decide if we have to lower the quality criteria for featured articles. --Panth 13:00, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] August Suggestions

Two new Featured Articles relating to Germany:

--Mcattell 23:56, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Excellent, I'll see if I can use one of them in September (you're a bit late for August, unfortunately). Happy editing, Kusma (talk) 09:31, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Germany maps

I was wondering if someone might be able to help me in generating some maps of Germany; see my user page for specifics. Thanks! --JamesR1701E 05:32, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Category Frankfurt?!

The articles Offenbach am Main and Offenbach-Lauterborn are listed in the category Frankfurt. Please someone take away these articles from the category. More than wrong. -Lemmy- (talk) 19:04, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Translation of Lastname of German royalties?

I found that many of the surnames of German royals have Lemmas which are the tranlsation of their last name. (e.g. Saxe-Weimar instead of Sachsen-Weimar). How come? I think, it is neccessary to differentiate between their surname and titels. I would not expect Albert Onestone for Albert Einstein either and in de:WP we wouldn't use Stephen Müller for Stephen Miller. --7Piguine (talk) 09:55, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
