[edit] Provincial political career
Gibeault ran as a candidate for the New Democrats in the Edmonton Mill Woods electoral district for the 1982 Alberta general election. He was defeated by incumbent Progressive Conservative MLA Milt Pahl who won a landslide.[2] Gibeault and Pahl would face each other again in the 1986 Alberta general election, with Gibeault defeating Pahl. Pahl's popular support dropped significantly falling by 6000 votes, while Gibeault also lost votes from the 1982 election. [3] Gibeault improved his margin of victory running for a second term in the 1989 Alberta general election.[4] He retired from provincial politics at dissolution of the Assembly in 1993.
[edit] Publishing
After leaving provincial politics, Gibeault briefly joined Commonwealth Publications Inc. as Marketing Director.[5] The Publishing House turned out to be very controversial prompting the Better Business Bureau to issue an alert about the company.[6] Gibeault soon returned to politics on the municipal level running for School Board Trustee in 1995.
[edit] Municipal politics
Gibeault ran as a public school trustee in the 1995 Edmonton municipal election. He won his first term in office taking 45% of the popular vote and defeating two other candidates in Ward I. He was re-elected in the 1998 Edmonton municipal election defeating David Fletcher in a two way race. He improved his popular vote taking 54%. He ran for a third term in office in the 2001 Edmonton municipal election. There were four challengers running against him that year. He dropped in popular vote share but he still managed to win with 36% of the vote. Gibeaults bid for a fourth term in the 2004 Edmonton municipal election would almost see him defeated by Judith Axelson who finished just over 200 votes behind Gibeault. Axelson and Gibeault would run against each other in the 2007 Edmonton municipal election with Gibeault winning by less then 100 votes.
