Germany competed at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, winning once again both the most gold medals and the most total medals of any nation. The Nationales Olympisches Komitee für Deutschland (National Olympic Committee of Germany, reorganized to DOSB in May 2006) nominated a total of 162 (164) athletes to compete, as the 5th largest team, to compete in all 15 of the Winter Olympic sports.

Sachenbacher-Stehle was suspended due to health reasons for the first five days of competition after recording too high values of haemoglobin in her blood[2].

Germany is planning to select a men's curling team to Turin. Positions in brackets are those which the players had at the 2005 European Curling Championships. The German team, consisting of the same players, finished third at the 2005 Ford World Men's Curling Championship.

Two men, Gerhard Blöchl and Christoph Stark, are selected for the moguls competition. No other freestyle event will have German participation. They are ranked 28th and 21st respectively in the men's moguls World Cup standings[3].

Germany's ice hockey contingent is their largest at the Olympics, with 20 women and 23 men. The men finished 15th at the 2005 Men's World Ice Hockey Championships, suffering relegation to Division I for 2006 after losses to Denmark (who are not taking part at the 2006 Olympics) and Kazakhstan, while the women finished 5th at the women's World Championships the same year, beating Russia and China on their way to a fifth place after being knocked out of the group stage with 1–5 and 0–7 defeats in their first two matches.

Thirty men have been nominated; when the NHL players join the squad on 12 February or 13 February, seven of these will be dropped.

Men’s halfpipe

In men’s halfpipe, there were two qualifying runs. The top 6 men from each qualifying run were advanced to the finals. In the first qualifying run, the top 6 scores ranged from 39.4 - 43.8 points. In the second qualifying run, the top 6 scores ranged from a 37.9 - 45.3 points. Shaun White from the United States won the gold medal with a final run score of 46.8 points. Andy Finch of the United States had the lowest final score of 24.7 points and took 12th place.
