VfB Germania Halberstadt is a German football club from Halberstadt, Saxony-Anhalt.

[edit] History

The club was founded on October 26, 1949 as BSG Reichsbahn Halberstadt before being re-named BSG Lokomotive Halberstadt in 1950. Through the 70s the team played in the East German third division DDR-Liga, occasionally dropping down to the Berzirksliga Magdeburg (IV).

After German re-unification in 1990 the team was re-established as ESV Halberstadt and spent two seasons in the Verbandsliga Sachsen-Anhalt (IV) before slipping to the Landesliga Sachsen-Anhalt in 1992. The club was twice re-named (as VfB Halberstadt in 1993 and as FC Germania Halberstadt in 1994) before taking on its current identity in 1997.

A third place result in the Landesliga Sachsen-Anhalt Mitte (VI) and successful promotion playoff returned Halberstadt to the Verbandsliga in 2000 and after winning the division title in 2003 advanced to the Oberliga Nordost-Süd where they play today. The club earned its best result in 2005-06 with a 6th place finish.
