Gerald Heathcliff Tippett is a fictional character in the New Zealand soap opera Shortland Street.
He is the new receptionist at Shortland Street Hospital and lives at El Rancho with Kieran Mitchell and Libby Jeffries. An earlier flatmate was Joey Henderson, a nurse who was revealed as the "Ferndale Strangler", a serial killer who later commited suicide. Gerald constantly annoys Yvonne Jeffries, but gets along well with her daughter Libby; they tend finish each other's sentences. While Libby was on holiday Gerald wrongly presumed that Chris Warner had offered him Libby's job as PA to the CEO, and for a time Libby became frosty towards Gerald, but they have since settled their differences. Gerald, forever a romantic, managed to get Kieran and Libby to rekindle their relationship, although Gerald seems to be attracted to Libby following a kiss when she ended a brief liaison with Sunil Kumari.
During the reign of the Ferndale Strangler, Gerald was threatened with suffocatrion and made to drive Joey's van away so police would follow him while Joey went a different way to his storage space.
It has been revealed that Gerald may not be gay as everyone assumed him to be, and it has been hinted that he is not straight either. In late April Gerald's childhood friend, Lindsey Reynolds, arrived in Ferndale and was employed at the hospital. Libby encouraged Gerald to go out with Lindsey and have a relationship; this failed and the two have since decided that it would be best to remain friends with Lindsey meeting someone else.
Recently Gerald replaced Libby as Chris Warner's PA. Gerald has found an attraction to Morgan and the two were paired up by Kieran who invited them to join him and Libby at a rave. Ecstacy was consumed by Kieran and Morgan and later by Gerald who when confronted by Libby he said he was sorry and felt that he "needed to relax".
