[edit] History of fire brigades in the UK

Hi there, I noticed you've got a sandbox article on the above, and was wondering if you could help expand a section on history in the article Fire service in the United Kingdom. You could then Wikilink to your article when it's complete. Any thougths? Escaper7 13:08, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Good work - I didn't serve for 30 years - quite a bit less but I'm a veteran of several major disasters, both as a JO and subsequently in broadcasting including the 1993 WTC bomb, the Paddington rail crash and Buncefield. Before that the Marchioness and Clapham train crah whilst in the job (to name a few!). Why don't you touch base with User:daysleeper47 in the US, he's i/c the fire project on Wiki. Meantime - why don't you publish your existing history article, cross link it to history sec in Fire service in the UK - then other eds can help build your stub up into a full article. Good luck. Regards. Escaper7 12:46, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
Hi I've put some comments re the above on the article's talk page. Let's move the discussion there now. It's full of some really interesting stuff. I hold the GIFE - you might want to contribute to Institution of Fire Engineers at some point given your extensive experience. Regards. Escaper7 07:37, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ministry of Defence Fire Services

Given your extensive experience, you might want to have a look at the above and its talk pages. You might be more familiar with this one - my comments on the talk pages are self explanatory. Regards Escaper7 13:50, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] History of fire service legislation

Hi there. Excellent work on this, it's extremely informative and thorough - brings back many memories of trying to implement some of the legislation. I would like to add some changes, but they are all minor, ad mostly relate to Wiki style - but I'd rather do this when the article is online, and don't want to list everything here. Some bigger points:

  • The RR (fire safety order) is not an Act - it's a statutory instrument - or "order in council", or secondary legislation. Simply an SI is used to alter existing legislation
  • Although your article is about fire safety legislation - I think you should include a section on the Fire and Rescue Services Act 2004 (I've done a stub on this). Why? Someone with a limited knowledge might wonder why it's not included - ie because it's not focused purely on fire safety but Section 6 (and 28 I think) deal with "promoting fire safety" and "empowering inspectors". It is now, as you know, the primary legislation for FRS in England and Wales. *Problem: If you mention and lik to the FRSA - you need to include the Scottish and NI equivalents. Confusingly the Fire Scotland Act (2005) covers in Scotland what the FRSA and RRO cover in England in one act - your article is about "UK history"... so you'll have to work that in. :) NI is covered by: The Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 S.I. No. 1254 (N.I.9) Ditto. But the good news is that you can lift the info and refs from my article Fire service in the United Kingdom.
  • Then... you should Wikilink all acts of parliament, check they work (or don't)[1] and list all statutory instruments - although these don't tend to have stubs on Wikipedia. I've thought about starting one on the RRO 2005 as it was such a massive change to the law.
  • Finally you need a killer reference in your opening paragraph to give weight to your opening statement. Surprisng how often this gets missed. I recently added one to the British Transport Police article - just by citing the BTP's "about us" on the homepage of its web. A pretty obvious thing that often gets missed.
  • So.. I think you should publish your article then we can help tweak. It's great work and I know history articles are very fiddly. Let me know when it's live. Regards Escaper7 07:35, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
Great article, very detailed. I've added one or two bits including the Scots/NI legislation. Regards. Escaper7 08:32, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your message

Hi thanks for your message. I'm taking a bit of time out from Wikipedia, so only logging in once or twice a week. On history of fire stations - I do know that Clerekenwell is the oldest operational stn in London. I'll check out the year for you. I'm going to move your article "historic fire brigades..." as per the discussion on the talk page as no one has raised any objections - probably in a week or so. I'll come back to you on the other points all the best Escaper7 12:34, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] In search of an answer from one of your articles

Hi there, hope you're well. Another user made lots of edits to an article I started Fire service in the United Kingdom. S/he claimed that the Fire Service Act 1947 was still primary legislation in Scotland. I turned to this article for some help, and although I'm sure the FSA DID apply to Scotland it doesn't say so in your article - so perhaps we should edit. The editor also claimed that the FSA never pplied to Northern Ireland - and on that one I'm stumped? any thoughts? Regards. Escaper2007

Thanks I'll leave it to you to update your own article with that, it'd be really useful to explain the differences across the UK. Please nb my new username regards: Escaper2007 11:20, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Bleaklow

Thanks for adding that navigation reference - I had in mind I'd seen it (or an equivalent quote) in a guidebook article by Showell Styles, published by Derbyshire Countryside, but haven't seen it about the house since... Bob aka Linuxlad 18:04, 3 June 2007 (UTC) Did the PW years ago (74 IIRC) and had half a yen to revisit on the trot 30 years on, but mi knees are shot! Used to live in Derby and got up there fairly often - I dimly remember the first time I crossed W to E in the mist, getting anxious on my dead-reckoning - but the mist suddenly lifted and I found I was surrounded by several other groups anxiously looking at their compasses... [edit] Highland Light

I got your message about the copyrighted text. I wouldn't say delete it, but do your best to adapt it without using the copyright text verbatim. As long as it is cited as a reference (preferably in-line) it should work out. I'll try to look it over for you some time later this week or this weekend and give you more specific advice and/or do some editing myself. --Midnightdreary 20:05, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

I think you're right: it's just far too much stolen text and I don't think we can salvage it. My personal recommendation would be to delete Highland Light and just go with Cape Cod Highland Lighthouse (is that the standard name?). What do you think? --Midnightdreary 23:26, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Moses Gate

No problem. I knew the old wives tale was wrong. As well as the book citation, there's the other which shows it was spelt "Moss Gate" on Greenwood's Map of 1818, although then it looks like "Mofs Gate". An old "s" back then looked like a "f". The "gate" bit is found in Deansgate, Bradshaw and Churchgate in Bolton. Anyway, nice to know that others are interested in the Bolton area. Regards Cwb61 (talk) 13:57, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Collieries

Collieries you may want to add:

Water Lane Colliery, Radcliffe. Black Cat Colliery, Radcliffe. Brinskon (or Brinkston or similar, map isn't clear) Colliery, Bury (next to Elton reservoir)

[edit] Green Flag/Green Pennant Awards

I see you worked on the Green Flag article. I have added some more info, though I am not too sure exactly how it should be referenced. I asked the Civic Trust to supply me with the criteria and I have put it in, but can I reference an e-mail from their employee? Also, I would like to link directly from the words Green Pennant Award to the Green Flag page, but I do not know how to do this. Can you please help?

IceDragon64 (talk) 22:54, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your help. My contact directed me to the place on the site where the Cristeria are, so no need for furhter refs. She said they would make it more prominant. I will check out your redirect.
