[edit] Biography

Early Years

Previously, Josh Willis Music Project used to be called Georgethan, which is a stage name. Georgethan was formed in 2001. His first album, The Georgethan Soundtrack, was released unsigned, and self-produced. His follow-up album, entitled The Georgethan Soundtrack Vol. 2, was also released unsigned and was awarded a positive rating by listeners. Shortly after his 3rd release, The Georgethan Soundtrack Volume 3, he hits the studio again planning a more aggressive, heavier self-titled album scheduled for a release in May 2008.

Mainstream Success

The third album, Apples to Apples, which was released on 23 October 2007, strayed from typical Georgethan genre, and Josh chose to abandon the typical patterns from the first two albums. Apples to Apples put Georgethan in the spotlight, and may result in a possible endorsement from Schecter Guitar Research. He says the new self-titled album is going to be very heavy, and more aggressive, but not "metal"

Recent Events

Shortly after the release of Apples to Apples, Georgethan announced that he was planning his fourth studio album, a self-titled album, scheduled for release on 21 May 2008[2]. J. Willis has stated that it is not an Apples to Apples Part 2 or Volume 2 Part 2, but he says it will attract fans of both original albums while still being a surprise.[3] Georgethan has stated that the mixing of the new album will be finished by early April 2008.

To "tide fans over" until the release of Apples to Apples, Georgethan released his first DVD, All Excess, on 17 July 2007. The DVD includes a documentary and live footage dating back to 2001 along with music videos and the making of the Drive-Through music video. It is a region-free DVD and is approximately 156 minutes long.

Band Name and Lyrical Content

The Name "Georgethan" was invented by the person behind Georgethan, Josh Willis, and it was a mix between George, and Jonathan. "You know, i was in 4th grade at the time, and we had to write a story about anything, and i created this ficticious character, which turned into Georgethan," says Willis. The songs he states are "mainly about random things that come to mind at the time." In the song, Morning Stubble, Willis said that he was sitting there, trying to think of a song idea, and saw a picture of somebody with a beard, and just started writing. Josh even said, "I just, the music's there to entertain and maybe thought-provoking on both sides, but I don't try to, like, really shove anything down anyone's throat. There's too many bands that do that nowadays, I think"

Genre

While often categorized as metal or hard rock, Georgethan's new material ranges across many genres, often leaving the concept of genres altogether (especially in his most recent album). For example, in his first album, which was almost completely "poppy", they deviated from that genre in the song "Intro", which is more symphonic than anything else. Also, in his newest album, the song "Dear God" is a slow song for Georgethan and "A Little Piece of Heaven" on the same album has some elements of broadway show tunes, using primarily brass instruments and stringed orchestra to take over most of the role of the lead and rhythm guitar. Georgethan/J. Willis does not restrict himself to a certain specific genre. He has, though, changed considerably since his first album, which was characterized as very light, to being more of a hard rock type band.
