Omar Deghayes is a resident of the United Kingdom being detained as an "unlawful combatant" in Camp Delta in the American Naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The Birmingham Post reported in an article published on Septtember 9. 2005, that Deghayes was 36, and was a "laws graduate" . His lawyer, Clive Stafford Smith. has reported that Deghayes is one of the hunger strikers in the hunger strike that started on August 8, 2005, that he has gone without food for five weeks, and that he is concerned that his life is at serious risk. According to Smith, Deghayes has been blinded : :"In March 2004 the Emergency Reaction Force in Camp Delta came into his cell," he said. "The brought their pepper spray and held him dow. The held both of his eyes open and sprayed it into his eyes and later took a towel soaked in pepper spray and rubbed it in his eyes. Omar could not see from either eye for two weeks but he gradually got sight back in one eye. He's totally blind in the right eye. I can report that his right eye is all white and milky - he can't see out of it because he has been blinded by the US in Guantanamo." :Mr Stafford Smith added that one of the officers also pushed his finger in Mr Deghayes eye. It was a combination of the pepper spray and the gouging which led to loss of his sight, the lawyer claimed... Smith reports that an expert he consulted says that a face captured in a video of a meeting with Osama Bin Laden, which security officials claim is Deghayes is "markedly different" from Deghayes. ==External links== *British resident blinded at Guantanamo, lawyer says (.pdf), Report prepared for the Law Society, by the Press Association, Febraury 17, 2005 *Protest at Brum factory making Cuba shackles, Birmingham Post, September 9. 2005 *U.S. Military Tube-Feeds 13 Gitmo Strikers, The Guardian, September 9, 2005 *Revealed: the diary of a British man on hunger strike in Guantanamo, The Independent, September 11, 2005 *Behind barbed wire in Guantanamo, Newsday, October 3, 2005 *Detainee: They blinded me, Newsday, October 3, 2005
