Text imported from the German Wikipedia, on finding it missing. But my line of enquiry was the following. In his article on "Twinned Crystals", R. W. Cahn (Adv. Phys. 3 (1954) 363-445) states, "Friedel's views on the dangers of bibliographies precluded him from giving any references in his otherwise most useful books."
