George W. Atherton was a good article nominee, but did not meet the good article criteria at the time. There are suggestions below for improving the article. Once these are addressed, the article can be renominated. Editors may also seek a reassessment of the decision if they believe there was a mistake.

I'm failing this article, although it is informative & well-written, for the following reasons:

  1. Lack of substantial references. At the time I read this article, there were only 2, both to websites. Certainly there must have been one or two books written about this man!
  2. Related to the above is the presence of several opinions unattached to any person or source. Evidently, he did a lot for PSU; however, for this to be a GA, these opinions need to be attached to a source.
  3. Most of this article is about the changes that happened at the University, & not about Atherton himself. It is conceivable that this material could be moved from this article into one about PSU, which would leave only the intro paragraph & a single paragraph about the man -- practically a stub! I'd say this is the article's major failing. -- llywrch 23:44, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
