[edit] Why?
Hello good people of America. I will remain anonymous do to privacy. I am in the 7th grade at Ruffing Montessori School in Cleveland Hts. OH. I am doing a research on Mr. Voinovich due to the fact that I am taking a school trip to Washington D.C. I used Google to find this site. I was looking for a wonderful and in-depth biography on our senator. I was wondering why I can not find one. It is interesting because Mr. Voinovich is such an interesting and important man. It is funny, there is a better biograhpy on say..... Brad Pitt. He is not as nearly important to the state of Ohio as our senator. No offense to any Brad Pitt fans. This topic just spiked my interest. -- 209.81.165.185 23:16, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Laugh-in
Much of the Laugh-In material has nothing to do with Voinovich. Is there another article that it is in? I think this section should bbe trimmed and perhaps another link to another article with this interesting information can be put in the article. Academic Challenger 00:48, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
- I see what you're saying. Perhaps it's better suited for the History of Cleveland, Ohio article? I've found more Voinovich info since I wrote this to replace it (which will be soon). -- Clevelander 13:49, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Influence?
Removed this:
- His greatest influence is said to be Frank J. Lausche, the first Cleveland mayor of Eastern European descent.
Needs sourcing, confirmation, etc. -- 149.79.146.138 17:27, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Croatian origin
Here's a link from the site of senator George Radanovich [1] and US Embassy in Zagreb [2]. Kubura 09:42, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
He is a Serb from Croatia.Vojnovic is not a Croatian surname.
The article states that Mr. Voinovich "has switched his positions to vote in favor of eliminating the estate tax." Please cite this, preferably with sources that show two or more differing votes. See also this June 12, 2006 article from the Cincinnati Enquirer, "Voinovich sides with Democrats."

As I understand it, he has been pretty clear in his estimation that completely repealing the estate tax would be "incredibly irresponsible and intellectually dishonest."

[edit] Serious sourcing problems
There are some serious sourcing problems with this article. Especially in the "Senate career" section. The last half of that section is completely unsourced, and contains commentary and speculation that is not encyclopedic. There is other unsourced speculation in the article, such as what he hoped, and where his support will most likely go. I won't delete anything tonight, but if there are not sources backing up some of this stuff, I will start gutting the article soon. I'm also listing this article on the BLP noticeboard. - Crockspot 05:10, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
- Crockspot, I've seen other articles that are a lot worse. If you'd like, I would be more than happy to work with you (or whomever is responsible for the recent expansive edits) to firm up the sourcing. But this article does not contain the kind of negative material that would raise a WP:BLP red flag. Dino 22:06, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] But he's American, right?
The article states that Sen. Voinovich was born in Cleveland. Why is a non-American spelling of his name on the English-language Wikipedia? Are not the interwiki links and the text links about his ethnic origins sufficient? Avt tor 07:17, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah it should be removed. The machine512 12:42, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] AEP ties?
Should Voinovich's ties with American Electric Power be mentioned in the article? He has received money from their CEO, and he has voted towards their interests. I have a site for a source: [3] --70.108.221.214 02:08, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Catholic or Orthodox?
Please don’t write that he's Roman Catholic, because he's not. He is SERBIAN American, and Serbs are ORTHODOX Christians. There are NO SERBIAN CATHOLICS. That would be like saying... someone who is Croatian, BUT ORTHODOX Croatian? That just doesn’t make sense. If anyone thinks different, he should have reliable source, until that happens, he is Orthodox Christian. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ahil82 (talk • contribs) 16:40, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
- I have no idea what religion Senator Voinovich is, but your argument that he is orthodox strictly because of his cultural heritage is absurd. I am a caucasian born in Ohio, but that doesn't mean I can't be muslim, hindu, or whatever else religion I may like. Your comment is harsh and unnecessary. Please, be civil. -- PEPSI2786talk 07:05, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

- Is absurd? That means that you have no idea anything about the Serbs. Please be civil? SERS ARE ORTHODOX, get it? There are no serbs catholics. The difference beetwean Croat and Serb, is Croats are catholics, Serbs are orthodox christians. THERE ARE NO CROATIAN ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS, and THERE ARE NO SERBIAN CATHOLICS. If he is catholic, then he is NOT a serb. You are wrighting about something that you don't understand, and know nothing about. And you cant give an example about OHIO, because USA is land of emigrants. There are no "ethnic USA" exept native americans. What you're saying is pure catholic propaganda. If man says that he is a Serb, than he is orthodox, and moderator of wikipedia should lock that information. If you think otherwise, than you need a quote, or citation. Until someone finds some reliable source that he is actioly Catholic, which I seriously doubt, because in that case he is not a serbian than. Thats like sayin "JFK is Irish, but he is probably protestant". If JFK is Irish that means that he is Catholic and PERIOD! Couse there are no Irish PROTESTANS, just like there are NO Serbian Catholics! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.216.194.240 (talk) 00:01, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
A simple search yielded an indirect quote on his religion to a local Ohio paper:
"Voinovich holds the Roman Catholic beliefs instilled in him by his mother but also was deeply influenced by the Serbian Orthodox faith of his father" [4],
as well references to him being a Catholic in C-SPAN's Congress Guide [5], Congress Merge [6], GovTrack [7] and an analysis of the number of Catholics in Congress [8]. I wasn't able to find any source on his affiliation with an Orthodox church. So I've changed the reference back to Roman Catholic. -- Nylad (talk) 00:47, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for taking the time to find the necessary quote. I really don't understand this fellows argument at all, and I'm going to go ahead not offer up further replies directly to him, as it appears he won't listen any way. Again, thanks for finding the necessary quote. -- PEPSI2786talk 01:23, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
