[edit] Difference with Geomatics
Hi, I'm coming from the French wikipedia where there is a discussion [1] about the difference between Geomatics and Geoinformatics. Could someone explain the difference ? Or is the a duplicate article ? Thanx in advance for any answer :o) --Piksou 09:50, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
Hello,
Well there is a difference between the two, however the subtlty of this difference depends on upon the context in which these words are used. Not actually having read the article you have mentioned above, I can only answer in terms of my experiences, so:
Geomatics is more concerned with the traditional surveying side of things, eg, the use of theodolites, optical and digital levels and so on.
Geoinformatics is more concerned with the technology in general, available to those in the spatial sciences industry, consisting not only of theodolites and levels, but also including GPS, in all it's various forms as well as GIS.
I hope this answers you question.

I'd have to say that in my experience geomatics, geoinformatics and geospatial are all essentially the same, with geomatics being a common term in Canada, geospatial in the US, and geoinformatics in parts of europe and asia. Ideally I think these ought to all resolve to one article but I don't feel confident enough to make such a change. --67.142.130.20 22:34, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
