[edit] January 2006
As someone who suffers this rather mild affliction, I'd just like to point out that sour things, particularly pineapples and tomatoes, irritate the tongue more than spicy foods. Of course, from what I know of it, it affects each individual differently. Fëaluinix 05:18, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
- Heh; mee too, and I stumbled over this article to find out that it was created relatively recently. I guess my case is milder, as I don't have irritations whatsoever (and grapefruits are my favorites). Should I upload a picture to compare whose is nicer :-))?

Spicy things almost don't affect me at all, though citrus fruits can bother me every once in awhile. People have recently noticed my tongue, and yes, they use it as an insult. xD Hitokirifelix 00:25, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
Just saying me too - spicy foods do not affect me, but pineapple especially and sometimes sugary food will irritate.122.148.189.5 (talk) 05:57, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Cases
I get it pretty bad. When I'm sick it looks like my tongue has been hit by meteors (leaving small craters). The next time I'm suck I'll try to remember to take a picture. It'll be fun!

- I noticed mine a couple of months ago. I have had my tongue pierced for about 7 years now. (I'm 28) I felt irritation for a couple of days, but figured I had maybe pulled on the barbell or twisted it or something. I was using a new mouthwash and while putting on mascara, I had my mouth open & noticed my tongue. Lets just say that as soon as I saw my tongue, I went straight to the computer and Googled "tongue ring worm." I was SO freaked out. Well, after looking at various pictures & reading different articles, every description of Geographic Tongue seemed to fit. (My Dr. agreed) The only time I have noticed it since is when I use the Wallyworld brand mouthwash & it's really bad. It literally looks like raised wormlike ridges that are light in color compared to the rest of my tongue/mouth. It's CREEPY! I can eat ANYTHING w/out it happening or bothering me, but that mouthwash does it every time and makes it burn/sting. My Dr. said that it probably came about because of all of my allergies and because I'm getting older & I was pregnant when it first came up. I have also found out that my cousin has it, too.
[edit] If you have geographic tongue please read this
From what I've seen on the internet it seems like no one takes this ailment seriously, but according to a book i read (Final Exits by Michael Largo) its actually deadly because it leads to swelling of the tongue wich can cause airway consrtiction. Most who die of it dont take seriously until it gets to the point where nothing can be done. This causes about 1760 deaths per year. So please tell me why it seems like no one on the internet takes it seriously. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.188.167.201 (talk) 21:25, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Geographic tongue
I have had almost permanent geographic tongue for the last twenty years and although it does not cause me any problems, apart from being rather unsightly, I have not found anything specific that triggers it or alleviates it. With respect to the condition possibly being caused by a deficiency, I have taken vitamin and mineral supplements for several years and have not noticed any affect on the condition. I do however have a very strong family history of eczema, asthma and hay fever (11/13 members on my maternal side including myself) and although I recognise that the condition may well be multifactorial, I am slightly biased towards a genetic cause. I will be asking around my relatives to find out if there are others in the family with it that I don't know about! 86.134.118.235 (talk) 19:07, 23 March 2008 (UTC)macadams 23/03/08 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.134.118.235 (talk) 19:04, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
