Georgia statewide elections, 2006

The Georgia statewide elections were held on November 7, 2006. The primary election was held on July 18. Contests where no single candidate got a majority (50% + 1 vote) were decided in a runoff election on August 8.
Prior to the election, the Democrats held most statewide offices, although the governor and a majority of the Legislature were Republicans.

In the Republican primary, incumbent Sonny Perdue defeated challenger Ray McBerry 88% to 12%, with 97% precincts reporting. In the Democratic primary, Lt. Governor Mark Taylor defeated Secretary of State Cathy Cox, Bill Bolton, and Mac McCarley with 51.7% of the vote to Cox's 44% (Bolton and McCarley received 2% of the vote each) with 97% of precincts reporting. Garrett Hayes, a Libertarian, faced Sonny Perdue and Mark Taylor in the general election. Independent John Dashler withdrew from the race, unable to collect the 40,000 signatures needed to go on the ballot.
Governor Sonny Perdue was re-elected to his second term winning 57.9% of the vote.
