State Route 356 is a short west-to-east state route located in northeast Georgia, United States. From its western terminus at S.R. 17/S.R. 75 north of Helen in White County, the route runs east to its eastern terminus at S.R. 197 in the community of Batesville in Habersham County.
[edit] History
The route was originally established in 1963 along the road now signed as S.R. 75 Alt, as an access road to the Richard Russell Scenic Byway (S.R. 348). In 1972, the current segment was added to the route. A few years later, the original segment was renumbered as S.R. 75 Alt to encourage its use as a bypass around the tourist traffic in Helen.
[edit] Significance
Today, the route is an important connector for tourist traffic in the mountains. More importantly, it is the principal access road to Unicoi State Park and Anna Ruby Falls.
