[edit] Routing
State Route 22 begins at the Alabama state line cosigned with U.S. 80. Together, the two routes travel east from Columbus, passing through Talbotton and Knoxville, before arriving in Macon, Georgia. In Macon, S.R. 22 departs U.S. 80 and travels northeast to Gray, cosigned with U.S. 129/S.R. 11. In Gray, S.R. 22 departs the two routes, and travels east through Milledgeville, then northwest to Sparta. After a brief cosignage with S.R. 15 north of Sparta, the two routes split, and S.R. 22 continues north, passing through Crawfordville and Lexington, to reach its northern terminus at S.R. 72 in Comer.
[edit] Significance
State Route 22 sees significant traffic around the Columbus area and between Macon and Milledgeville. Between Columbus and Macon, most through traffic has been to diverted to S.R. 96, which is has recently been upgraded for implementation into the Fall Line Freeway. North of Sparta, S.R. 22 sees scant usage; the Average Annual Daily Traffic (or AADT) is less than 2000 vehicles north of the cosignage with S.R. 15. [1]
[edit] Banner Routes
State Route 22 has two banner routes:
[edit] State Route 22 Connector
Georgia State Route 22 Connector is a short connector in Columbus. It connects the S.R. 22 mainline to S.R. 85.
[edit] State Route 22 Spur
Georgia State Route 22 Spur connects the S.R. 22 mainline with downtown Columbus. State Route 22 follows the former alignment of S.R. 22 (and U.S. 80) through Columbus.
