Georgia's 10th congressional district is located in northeastern Georgia, and includes the cities of Athens, Evans, Augusta, Watkinsville, and Toccoa.
Charlie Norwood was elected to represent the 10th District in the 110th Congress on November 7, 2006. After Norwood's death on February 13, 2007, a special election was held to fill the vacancy, which was won by Paul Broun. State Representative Barry Fleming announced that he will challenge Broun for the 2008 Republican nomination, while Bobby Saxon of Jackson County, Georgia is the only announced Democratic candidate for the seat. Saxon has a headquarters on Milledge and Broad Streets in Athens.[1]

[edit] Special election 2007
This seat was vacated upon the death of Charlie Norwood, and pursuant to Georgia law a nonpartisan special election was held on June 19, 2007[2]. No candidate won a majority in the first round, so a July 17 runoff was held between the top two finishers: Republicans Jim Whitehead, a state senator from Evans, and Dr. Paul Broun, a physician from Athens.[3] The day after the runoff, Broun led Whitehead by less than 1% with absentee ballots still to be counted.[4] After Whitehead declined to call for a recount, the final vote tally had Broun winning by 394 votes.[5] Broun was sworn into office on July 25, 2007.[6]
[edit] 2008 election
The first announced candidate in the 2008 Democratic Party primary is Iraq War Veteran Bobby Saxon.[1]
The first announced candidate in the 2008 Republican Party primary is State Representative Barry Fleming,[2].
