George Wakeman

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sir George Wakeman was a physician to Catherine of Braganza, Consort of Charles II of England. In 1679, he became a victim of the fraudulent claims of Titus Oates. Oates, with the help of the Earl of Danby, accused Wakeman of conspiring to kill the King and place his brother the King James II of England on the throne in his place.

Wakeman impugned Oates and his fellow conspirators, and was acquitted at his trial in 1679. Titus Oates was later discredited, and when Charles II died naturally in 1685, and was succeeded by his brother James II of England, he was pilloried and denounced by the George Jeffreys, 1st Baron Jeffreys.
