George Kollias is the current drummer for the American technical/brutal death metal band Nile. He is the first of their four drummers to perform every song on more than one full length album (handling drum duties so far on Annihilation of the Wicked and Ithyphallic). He is a native of Greece (born in Korinthos). Some of his favorite bands are Metallica, Kreator, Morbid Angel and Behemoth. He started playing drums at the age of 12 and some years later started drum lessons with John Stavropoulos, a well known Greek drummer. In addition to being the drummer of Nile he also teaches drums at the Modern Music School in Athens.

He previously drummed for Sickening Horror, a brutal death metal band. He also used to be in the Greek melodic death metal band Nightfall, but left the band in 2005 to join Nile.

[edit] Technique

Kollias is notable for using only one kick pedal during blast beats[citation needed], rather than the double-kicks employed by most drummers. He is also known for his extremely fast yet very technical drumming.

He is also known as having some of the fastest feet in death metal, continuing Nile's tradition (with drummers such as Derek Roddy and Tony Laureano on previous albums). In the song 'Sacrifice Unto Sebek' on the album Annihilation of the Wicked his double bass speed clocks in at 265bpm (semiquavers) or 1060 single strokes of the bass pedal if measured over a one minute time scale[citation needed]. On Nile's new album, Ithyphallic, the song 'Papyrus Containing the Spell to Preserve its Possessor Against Attacks From He Who is In the Water' was clocked at 271 bpm according to album producer Neil Kernon.[citation needed]
