George Kemp, 1st Baron Rochdale

George Kemp, 1st Baron Rochdale CB Kt (9 June 1866–24 March 1945) was a British politician and businessman.
Kemp was educated at Shrewsbury, Balliol College, Oxford and Trinity College, Cambridge and in 1895, he was elected MP for Heywood. In 1900, he served in the Boer War and commanded the 32nd Battalion of the Imperial Yeomanry to the end of the war in 1902. In 1909, he was knighted for his services and was elected MP for Member for Manchester North West a year later. On his retirement from politics in 1912, he was raised to the peerage a year later as Baron Rochdale, of Rochdale, co. Palatine of Lancaster. Called to war again a few years later, Lord Rochdale commanded the 1st/6th Battalions of the Lancashire Fusiliers during the Battle of Gallipoli in 1915.
On 5 August 1896, he had married Lady Beatrice Mary Egerton (the third daughter of the 3rd Earl of Ellesmere) and they had three children. Lord Rochdale died in 1945 and was succeeded by his eldest son, John.
