George J. Hatfield State Recreation Area

The George J. Hatfield State Recreation Area is in the San Joaquin valley about 20 miles south of Modesto, California and is surrounded by the Merced River. The park has many trees and is home to various wildlife, especially birds. Swimming, fishing and picnicking are popular activities.

The George J. Hatfield State Recreation Area is is one of the 48 California state parks proposed for closure in January 2008 by California's Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as part of a deficit reduction program.[1]
