George Hele

George Alfred Hele (born 16 July 1891 at Brompton, South Australia; died 28 August 1982 at Melbourne, Victoria) was a cricket Test match umpire.

He umpired sixteen Test matches, between 1928 and 1933. He made his debut in the first Test match played at the Exhibition Ground in Brisbane on 30 November 1928. This match, which also saw the debut of Don Bradman, was won by England by 675 runs, still the largest victory by runs in Test match history. His last match was played at Sydney on 23 February to 28 February 1933. This was the last Test of the ‘Bodyline’ series, and was again won comfortably by England. His colleagues in most of his matches were Dave Elder and George Borwick.

Johnnie Moyes said that “in the opinion of those qualified to judge, (Hele) was perhaps the finest umpire Australia has produced” up to 1959.
