George Bennett was a rugby league player. He is the first black man to represent the national Great Britain or England team at rugby league, a feat not replicated in soccer until Viv Anderson 44 years later.
James Peters had previously played for the England rugby union side in 1906, although he was deselected whilst there was some disquiet about his selection on the basis of his race. Peters was later expelled from rugby union and pursued a rugby league career with Barrow and St Helens.
By that time, Clive Sullivan had become the first black rugby league captain in 1972 for Great Britain.
