George A. Wilson

George Allison Wilson (April 1, 1884 - September 8, 1953) was a United States Senator and Governor of Iowa. Born on a farm near Menlo, Iowa, he attended the rural schools, and Grinnell College; he later graduated from the law school of the State University of Iowa at Iowa City in 1907, and was admitted to the bar the same year, commencing practice in Des Moines. He was assistant county attorney of Polk County, Iowa from 1912 to 1914 and was county attorney from 1915 to 1916. He was district judge from 1917 to 1921 and was a member of the Iowa Senate from 1925 to 1935.

Wilson was Governor of Iowa from 1939 to 1943, and was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate for the term beginning January 3, 1943, but was not sworn in until January 14, 1943, continuing as Governor during the interim; his service in the Senate was from January 14, 1943, to January 3, 1949. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1948, losing to Guy M. Gillette, and resumed the practice of law. Wilson died in Des Moines in 1953, and his interment was in Glendale Cemetery.
