Georg Thiele

Georg Max Thiele was a German Naval Officer (Korvettenkapitan) killed during World War I. His ship, Torpedoboot S119, was sunk by British forces on a minelaying mission in October 1914.
The German destroyer Z2 was named Georg Thiele in his honour. Georg Thiele was part of the invasion of Norway, Operation Weserübung. She was part of the fleet sent to northern Norway with the purpose of capturing the town Narvik. On the 13th April 1940 the Georg Thiele ran itself ashore near Sildwik in the inner parts of Rombaksfjord after sustaining substiantial damage through several hits by the chasing British ships.
