Gentlemen of St. John's

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gentlemen of St. John's are considered to be one of the finest and most exciting male-voiced consorts in Britain. 'The Gents' are made up of the choral scholars (and lay clerks) of the Choir of St John's College, Cambridge and sing a wide range of music, from Renaissance to Close Harmony. Many of the more light-hearted arrangements that they sing are arrangements of past and present members of the group. Particularly of note is the rare combination of high levels of musicality and a full and exciting sound which gives them the flexibility to sing a very large range of repertoire.

Their discography includes:

Gently Does It - a CD of lighthearted music ranging from some traditional folk songs to more contemporary popular classics from The Beatles to Michael Jackson;

Nesciens Mater - music by the French Renaissance composer, Jean Mouton. The title track, Nesciens Mater was voted 2nd best christmas track in 2007 by Gramophone magazine;

Mix Well - Arrangements of jazz standards, popular songs including those by The Beatles and The Beach Boys. All the arrangements are by past and present members of the group.

Although based in Cambridge, they regularly make international tours and enjoy a rich schedule of concerts and other engagements up and down the country.
