Genoa City (fictional city)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A fictional version of Genoa City, Wisconsin, USA is the setting for the long-running American soap opera The Young and the Restless. The real and fictional towns are similar only in name. Although the real Genoa City is a village with just over 2,000 people, the version depicted on the soap opera is a mid-sized city.

[edit] Overview

Within the city boundaries are many office buildings, a major international airport and a top hospital. Genoa City also happens to be home to many large companies, including two large conglomerates(Newman Enterprises and Chancellor Industries), the internationally known Jabot Cosmetics, which is a high-end cosmetics firm, and a new company called NVP Retreats. Genoa City is also home to Fenmore Department stores.

Throughout the city you can find many homes, including Condominiums, basic houses, farms and luxurious estates. Two prominent estates are the Abbott Mansion and the Chancellor Estate. The other major residence of note is the Newman Ranch, home to Genoa City's most prominent family, the Newman family.

Education is important to the city and it includes such fine schools as Genoa City Elementary, Walnut Grove Academy and Genoa City University, also known simply as GCU.

Ironically, the fictional town uses Lake Racine as a mid- to large-sized lake in the area, while Racine is near Lake Geneva in Wisconsin.

Unfortunately throughout the years, the city has continuously had crime issues, from petty crime to corporate sabotage and even to kidnapping and murder. Multiple murderers have been let loose from jail including most recently Jana Hawkes and some crimes have never been solved and just been dropped(the current Ji Min Kim murder case being one).

Also the city's climate while fairly calm has recently been going through yearly storm surges. Usually at winter at which time most of the city is forced to shut down and come to a complete halt.

In November 2007 there was a major incident at the Clear Springs project that involved the collapse of a major parking structure that killed and injured many people. Currently there are outstanding lawsuits surrounding this issue and Victor Newman's drilling company.
