From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Genesis Power Limited is a New Zealand electricity generation and electricity retailing company, and trades as Genesis Energy. It was formed from the breakup of the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand (ECNZ) in 1999 as a result one of the reforms of the New Zealand Electricity Market and corporatised to become a state-owned enterprise with its own board of directors and Ministerial shareholders. The shareholders are the Minister of Finance and the Minister of State Owned Enterprises.
The company owns and operates hydroelectic generating stations on the Tongariro Scheme, namely Rangipo (120 MW) and Tokaanu (240 MW) and the Tuai, Kaitawa and Piripaua stations on Lake Waikaremoana (142 MW) as well as a coal thermal plant (1000 MW) on the Waikato River at Huntly power station. The Huntly also has a 48MW open cycle gas turbine unit, known as P40, commissioned in 2004. The company also has a windfarm and interests in small hydro and cogeneration schemes.
The construction of Genesis Energy's 385MW combined cycle gas turbine generator at Huntly was launched on 21 February 2005 by the Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Helen Clark. The NZ$520 million project, more commonly known as Huntly e3p, is one of the largest infrastructure projects currently underway in New Zealand. Commissioning is expected to be completed by winter 2007.
