The General Intercessions or Prayers of the Faithful or Prayers of the People are a series of prayers which form part of the Mass in the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church. These prayers are also found in the liturgies of Lutheran, Anglican, Methodist and other wester liturgical churches.
They can be written by the pastor or by a parish liturgist and generally follow a specified format including a response to each prayer by the congregation. They typically follow a progression beginning with prayers for the Church universal, then prayers for the world, the poor, and for particular needs.
[edit] Examples
- For His Holiness Benedict XVI, that he may shepherd the church throughout the world with the care of Christ for his flock.
- For those who suffer poverty or any material or spiritual lack, that they may receive the consolation of God and the generosity of neighbor.
