Genei Ryodan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Genei Ryodan (幻影旅団?) (also known as the Phantom Brigade, or Phantom Troupe in the Viz Media translation) is the name for a gang of thieves, from the anime/manga series Hunter × Hunter.

The group consists of a total of 13 nen users. New members join the group by killing (and therefore replacing) a previous member. In case of where a member dies of other causes, the leader of the group, Kuroro Lucifer, is responsible to find a suitable replacement.

Profile
Gender Male
Nen Information
Nen type: Materialization
Nen ability: Batte Le Cantabile

Bonorenofu is member number 13. He dresses partially in rags and looks like a mummy. During the York Shin arc, his appearance was insignificant. During the Chimera Ant arc, he was seen fighting with the rest of the Genei Ryodan against the Chimera ants. Very little is known about his personality and reasons for joining the Ryodan, but in the fight with the Chimera ants he displays a mocking and confident attitude. His physical power ranks eighth among the Ryodan.

Background: Bonorenofu originates from the Gyudondondo tribe, and is one of the Genei Ryodan who did not originate from Ryūseigai. He dresses in bandages, which cover up a mass number of holes throughout his body.

Nen Ability: Batte Le Cantabile He plays music through the holes on his skin during battle, with different songs creating different nen effects, such as transformation of his own body or the materialization of objects. He is from the Gyudondondo tribe, and when the boys from this tribe are three years old, needles are poked into their body. These needles are slowly replaced with bigger needles, and eventually sticks, until holes in the skin are created. The people of this tribe are called "dancing warriors".

So far there have been two different phases to his nen: The prologue and the Jupiter. The Prologue phase allows him to materialize a warrior to attack for him. The Jupiter phase allows him to materialize a giant boulder and crush his enemies.

Profile
Gender Male
Date of birth Unknown, even to Feitan[1]
Nen Information
Nen type: Transformation
Nen ability: Pain Packer

A mysterious member of the Genei Ryodan, Feitan is attired in what one would expect from a bandit-- dark clothes with a skullhead scarf that covers his mouth. Feitan seldom speaks, but when he does, usually there's a word missing. Feitan's first language most likely isn't Japanese, but he has shown to be rather proficient in the Chinese language. He is one of the original members hailing from Ryūseigai. After Feitan's victory over Zazan in Ryūseigai, he has been granted temporary control over the Genei Ryodan.

Feitan is an assassin down to his core, and is quite skilled at his profession. His movement is incredibly fast; Feitan is able to leave afterimages of his body due to his rapid steps. He wields an umbrella that conceals both a sword and a gun that can fire the metal tip for a surprise attack. His physical power is the 5th strongest in the Ryodan.

Nen Abilities - Pain Packer: Pain Packer allows Feitan first to use his aura to materialize a protective armor. Then, all of the damage that he has received in battle is converted into scorching heat (named "Rising Sun") and is emitted into the air. The emitted nen transforms into a miniature sun that burns the victim to death. Rising Sun has a very large attack radius, and while Feitan is within his armor he will not be harmed by the fire.

Nen Information
Nen type: Emission[2]
Nen ability: Double Machine Gun (ダブルマシンガン 「俺の両手は機関銃」)[3]

A hulking, Frankensteinian monster is what Franklin (フランクリン Furankurin?) appears to be, complete with scars and sewn-up wounds that ravage his face. It does seem though, that beneath his harsh exterior lies a small, caring spot in his character, as Franklin acts as a care-giver to Shizuku, and shows concern of her well-being. He is also composed and respectful, normally breaking up arguments and fights within the organization. He is one of the Genei Ryodan that originated from Ryūseigai and ranks 4th in physical power.

  • Nen Ability: Double Machine Gun (ダブルマシンガン 「俺の両手は機関銃」)

The tips of Franklin's fingers can retract; he fires his nen out as bullets. There had been no need to remove the tips surgically, doing so showed a commitment that greatly enhanced the force of his bullets. [2] This power has been shown to wipe out a room full of people within seconds.

Age Unknown[4]

Nen Information
Nen type: Materialization[4][5]
Nen ability: Gallery Fake - "Divine Left Hand, Demonic Right Hand"[6]

The most distinctive thing about Korutopi, known as Kortopi in the Viz Media translation, is his haggard appearance. A thick and messy mane of hair flops down his face, obscuring everything except for an occasional glimpse of his eyeball. He is the weakest in the Ryodan in physical power.

Nen Ability: Gallery Fake - "Divine Left Hand, Demonic Right Hand"[7]

When Korutopi touches an object with his left hand, his nen ability allows him to make an exact replica of that object with his right hand. He cannot replicate living things except as inanimate objects, and Korutopi is also unable to replicate another user's nen. The replicas that he creates vanish after 24 hours, regardless of their size. However, before their disappearance, Korutopi is able to track the movements of any copied object if he can touch the original.[8]

Age Unknown[9]

Nen Information
Nen type: Transformation[10][9]

Not known to show much emotion, Machi seems to be one of the coldest member of the Genei Ryodan. Hisoka seems to have an occasional interest with her, although it's hard to see whether it's genuine, given Hisoka's unpredictability. Machi also doesn't appear to be interested a single bit, spurning his advances on all occasions. She is incredibly loyal to Kuroro, this is proven when she threatened to hunt down and kill Hisoka if he managed to kill Kuroro in a fight. Machi is one of the original Genei Ryodan from the Ryūseigai. Physically she is the strongest woman in the Ryodan, and 6th overall.[11]

Nen Ability: Machi transforms her aura into thin wispy-long threads in which she uses in a variety of ways, including seaming together old wounds to heal them, repairing back dislodged limbs (like what she did for Hisoka), and forming a noose that can strangle enemies with a tug. Her thread's strength is inversely proportional to the length. The longer the thread she makes, the easier it is to break.[10]

Date of birth September 8th, 1970[13]
Nen Information
Nen type: Reinforcement[12]

Like one of the ronin warriors in Edo period Japan, Nobunaga comes complete with a long katana that he uses with great finesse and skill. Nobunaga's specialty is the unparalleled use of the sword in executing enemies. His best friend is Ubogin, and the two bring out the best in each other during combat. Seeing some of Ubogin's personality in Gon, he expressed interest in having Gon join the Ryodan, though Gon adamantly refused. He is one of the Genei Ryodan that originated from Ryūseigai and ranks 9th in physical power.[11]

Nobunaga's En: Nobunaga supplements his sword fighting skills is the use of the advanced Nen technique En, which he can extend up to 4 meters[14] (about 13 feet 1 inch). Using this ability, Nobunaga can instantaneously attack any opponent that enters his detection radius, even if he is not able to see them.

Date of birth Unknown[15]
Date of death September 4th[16]
Nen Information
Nen type: Specialization[17][15]
Nen ability: Memory Bomb (「記憶弾」Recollection Bullet)[18]

A sophisticated woman with revealing attire, Pakunoda exudes an air of self-confidence that can be intimidating to others. Pakunoda is fully loyal to Kuroro, and even goes against the Genei Ryodan in order to help him. She is killed by Kurapika's Judgement Chain in the climax of the Genei Ryodan arc. This is because she uses her memory bullets to tell the others about what happened to Kuroro, which violated the restrictions Kurapika placed upon her. Pakunoda is one of the original Genei Ryodan from Ryūseigai (Meteor City/City of the Shooting Star). Her physical strength is 11th in the Ryodan.

Nen Ability - Memory Bomb: (「記憶弾」Recollection Bullet)[18] Pakunoda is able to read the conscious thoughts of any person she is in physical contact with and can extract memories by asking specific questions. Attempting to create false information is impossible, since Pakunoda can extract her target's purest memories. The information she collects is highly useful in exposing weaknesses and secrets, especially in finding out the opponent's nen ability or in situations requiring some form of extortion or blackmail. Pakunoda's ability can also be used to see the recent past of an object.[19]

Pakunoda also has the ability to share her memories by shooting them into another person's head using a revolver and materialized Nen Bullets. This is not a combat ability, and does no damage. However if she shoots someone with a memory of their own, it is erased indefinitely.[17]

Nen Information
Nen type: Reinforcement
Nen ability: Ripper Cyclotron (廻天 Heavenly Rotation)

Phinx, also known as Phinks in the Viz Media translation of the series, is a genius when it comes to unarmed combat. Phinx uses his hands in battle, which has been shown to be extremely powerful (2nd strongest physically in the Ryodan). He is rather brash and have a tendency to get into conflicts with other people. Phinx is one of the Genei Ryodan that originated from Ryūseigai. He first appears in Egyptian Suit but later changed into jogging suit. He seems to get along with Feitan.

Nen Ability - Ripper Cyclotron: Phinx's nen ability involves how many times he rotates his arm. The more rotations that he does with the arm, the stronger his blow will become.

Nen Information
Nen type: Manipulation[20][21]
Nen ability: Black Voice (ブラック ボイス 「携帯する他人の運命」)[22]

From his appearance, Shalnark (Sharunāku?) seems to be a guileless and normal boy. However, see him in action with the rest of the Genei Ryodan and that thought is dispelled. Shalnark is one of the most intelligent and quick-thinking members in the group--being adept at using the computer and at information gathering, providing the brains behind the brawn. Shalnark is also a licensed Hunter, so he has access to certain information that could be potentially useful in the Genei Ryodan. He has the member number 9, and ranks 10th in physical power (except in Auto Mode).

  • Nen Ability: Black Voice (ブラック ボイス 「携帯する他人の運命」), lit. Cellphone Controlling a Person's Fate

Shalnark is able to control the physical movements of any person he has targeted, as long as he has a special antenna on them and that person is not already being controlled. This is done via a cell phone interface in which he remotely controls other people from a distance, while pointing the cell phone at the antenna he placed on the person.

  • Nen Ability: Auto Mode

By placing an antenna on himself then giving instructions for a task to himself (along the lines of nen-based self-hypnosis), Shalnark can enter Auto Mode and temporarily gain immense strength. Once Shalnark has entered Auto-Mode, he cannot withdraw from it until the task he instructed himself has been accomplished. After leaving Auto Mode, Shalnark experiences intense muscle pain for two or three days.[23] He also does not retain any memory of what happens while in that state.

Title Member #8
Nen Information
Nen type: Materialization[25][24]
Nen ability: Demon Vacuum Deme-Chan

Member number 8 in the Genei Ryodan, a replacement for the last member since the Ryodan came together. Shizuku is extremely forgetful. If she is ever unable to remember something, she will never remember it, no matter how others may try to remind her[26]. She can be an airhead at times which, along with her unassuming appearance, can cause her opponents to underestimate her combat abilities. Shizuku is also left-handed[27], and the 12th physically strongest out of the 13 members of the Ryodan.[11]

Nen Ability - Deme-chan (Blinky): Shizuku uses her nen to create a self-styled "living" vacuum cleaner she names "Deme-chan" that is able to consume any non-living objects. This has proven very useful in many occasions for cleaning up evidence that the members leave behind, especially blood and dead corpses. Living things or objects made from Nen cannot be consumed. In combat, Shizuku can use the vacuum as a club weapon, or use the razor sharp teeth on Deme-chan's "mouth" as piercing weapon.[28] No object consumed by her vacuum cleaner can be retrieved, except for the very last object sucked in. No one knows where the sucked up items go, not even Shizuku herself[25].

Title Member #11[31]
Nen Information
Nen type: Reinforcement[32][29]
Nen ability: Big Bang Impact (「超破壊拳」Super Destruction Fist)[33]

Member number 11 of the Genei Ryodan, Ubogin is one of the original members of the Ryodan from the Ryūseigai. Out of all of the Genei Ryodan, he is the strongest in terms of raw physical power.[34][11] Ubogin is so strong, direct hits from bullets, sniper bullets, and even anti-tank rockets will do no visible damage to him.[35] Like all of the Ryodan, Ubogin never hesitates to kill, and in fact particularly enjoys combat against skilled opponents. Although he prefers to fight alone, Ubogin becomes stronger when fighting with a partner (specifically, Nobunaga), because he fights better when he has someone else to protect, although he would never admit this.[36]

Death: Seeking revenge on Kurapika for capturing him after his battle with the Injyuu, Ubogin tracked Kurapika to the hotel where Neon and the rest of her bodyguards were staying. They fought one-on-one in a small canyon on the outskirts of York Shin City. Kurapika eventually captures Ubogin with his Chain Jail, and questions him about the location and abilities of the other Ryodan members. Ubogin refuses to answer any questions, only telling Kurapika, "Kill me." Finally, Kurapika pierced Ubogin's chest with the Judgement Chain ability, giving Ubogin the condition that he must answer all questions truthfully. Kurapika once again asks Ubogin the location of the other Ryodan members, to which Ubogin only smiles and calls Kurapika an idiot. Kurapika's Judgement Chain pierces Ubogin's heart, instantly killing him. Ubogin is buried in an unmarked grave at the site of their battle.

Nen Ability: Big Bang Impact: Ubogin's favorite ability is his "Big Bang Impact". Though it is little more than a punch pumped with nen,[37] it is extremely powerful due to Ubogin's level of Reinforcement nen. The impact can create a large crater several meters in width and depth. [38] His goal was to make the Big Bang Impact as powerful as a nuclear missile.[32]
