Gellerup
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gellerup is a western suburb to the city of Aarhus, Denmark. The term Gellerup is also commonly used to refer to a large housing project called Gellerupparken located in the suburb. The housing project was built in 1968-72 and contains in total 1776 apartments.
Gellerupparken was built to last for only 30 years to take care of the housing problems that suddenly emerged in the late 1960s.[citation needed] It is still there, however it has been heavily renovated.
Today Gellerup is mostly known throughout Denmark for its multi-ethnicity due to a large concentration of people with foreign backgrounds. The ethnic makeup was once compromised by several nationalities altogether, with a significant portion of Asians (mainly Vietnamese), Greenlanders and native danes, but today the vast majority is Turkish, Palestinian and Somali. Gellerup has also been known through the media for crime and riots[1], which Brabrand Boligforening try to prevent by end the leasing of apartments to families with kids there are known for making trouble in the area.
