[edit] History

NBC has recently announced that it has ordered a pilot for a United States version of the popular UK television show "Top Gear" to be titled "Gear." It was widely reported in a January 15th, 2008 article by Reuters and the Hollywood Reporter. BBC Worldwide has been contracted to produce the pilot for NBC.[1]

Adam Carolla reported on his radio program that he would be filming for Top Gear at the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro on March 20, 2008.

According to NBC reality chief Craig Plestis, many automakers have already shown interest in America's version of "Top Gear."[2]

Some concern has been raised over the show's future as it was left out of NBC's recently released 52-week schedule, but many speculate that the omission of "Gear" will only last until a pilot of the show is screened by NBC and given the green light.

[edit] Format

The show is said to follow a similar format to the one in the UK. There will once again be four presenters, including a secret racing driver, as well as a segment wherein celebrities set lap times in a reasonably priced car. In addition, challenges similar in nature to the convertible people carrier and stretch limo challenges will be replicated in the American version.

During an April 9th, 2008 broadcast of his morning radio show, Adam Carolla confirmed that "Gear" will essentially be a carbon-copy of the UK's "Top Gear," but with American hosts.

[edit] Presenters

NBC is currently in the process of casting the program's four presenters. It was rumored in early 2008 that the presenters would be named at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan.

Although the hosts were not named at the 2008 NAIAS, radio personality Adam Carolla has announced his involvement with the program, presumably as one of the presenters.[3]

Edmunds.com recently reported that LA Times automotive journalist Dan Neil will be a part of the show, although it is unclear whether or not he will act as a presenter.[4]

As of April 10th, 2008, it was reported that NBC had released Dan Neil from his contract in favor of "drift king" Tanner Foust.[5]
