The GE Dash 9-40C is a 4,000 hp (2,980 kW) diesel locomotive that was built by GE Transportation Systems of Erie, Pennsylvania between January 1995 and March 1995. All 125 units were built for Norfolk Southern under GE order number 338-26925 and their builder's numbers run 48224-48348. The C40-9 was built with a lower horsepower rating than standard, 4,000 hp instead of the then GE standard 4,400 hp The reasoning for this is it would prolong the life of the prime mover and give the units more running time between major overhauls. These were the only conventional cab Dash-9's built. All units have rooftop mounted air conditioner units. This gives the units their distinct look and their nickname, "top hats".
