The GE Dash 9-40CW is a 4,000 hp (2,980 kW) diesel locomotive that was built by GE Transportation Systems of Erie, Pennsylvania between January 1996 and September 2004. All 1,089 units were built for Norfolk Southern. These units were basically an extension of the previous order for the standard cab GE Dash 9-40C. They were built under the same premise that a lower horsepower rating would prolong the life of the engine. This unit was replaced in the new locomotive catalog with the Evolution Series model, the ES40DC.
