Template talk:Gcdb
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
[edit] Usage
Simply use this formula:
{{gcdb|type=credit|search=Charlie+Adlard|title=Charlie Adlard}}
As shown here: Charlie Adlard.
If the entry isn't disambiguated (like the above example) you can trim it down to:
{{gcdb|credit|Charlie+Adlard}}
Specifying that they are type and title isn't actually required but doing it in long form might be helpful to future editors.
Note also that they list "penciller" and "inker" separately which could mean that you'd have to list the GCDB twice but the trick seems to be switching it to "credit" which will pull out any credits which is handy as artists can often also have plotting and scripting credits and this catches all of that.
NOTE 2: There is a field for sorting chronologically (in the query string it is "&sort=chrono" if that is deemed preferable this can be added into the template as a default or the template can be expanded to allow this. (Emperor 13:24, 22 October 2007 (UTC))
- Agree with chronological. I've always found it best when I do a search to have the results come in chronologically (as here, using a Ditko example) rather than alphabetically as here. I find chronological works better when writing a bio.--Tenebrae 16:31, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Others
The site uses a real mix of querystring structures that aren't easy to boil down into a single template. So it looks like we'll need more. So far these are:
- {{gcdb series}} - example on Sleeper (comics)
We currently don't have one for issues example but if the need arises it can easily be based on the above 9and if someone is cleverer at wiki fu they might be able to adapt that one to work for both). (Emperor 15:53, 22 October 2007 (UTC))
- Seems there is already a template for this {{GCD}} that I've only just stumbled across. Not sure what folks want to do about this replication. (Emperor (talk) 16:29, 7 June 2008 (UTC))
[edit] Kudos
This is great! I've used GCD as an invaluable resource (along with AtlasTales and the Unofficial Handbook of Marvel Comics Creators), and this will help others more easily utilize that great database. --Tenebrae 16:29, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
- Bravo on the chron sort, Emperor! --Tenebrae 14:45, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

- No problem - you were right it is more useful.

- One thing I did notice was that "credits" sometimes doesn't seem to work - the site might have been having a bad hair day (or at least the server equivalent) but I'm sure when I checked the Nail Gaiman link I was adding it only brought up 4 results. Switching to "writer" fixed it. (Emperor 15:31, 25 October 2007 (UTC))
